After decades of Nintendo largely walking away from Hollywood following the infamous 1993 live-action take on the game, it’s finally time for Mario and Luigi to make their way onto the big screen. Illumination and Universal are bringing the video game world to life in an animated film, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
Chris Pratt
The Super Mario Brothers Movie is a Nintendo-Illumination collaboration that sees Pratt as the portly plumber, accompanied by an all-star cast. The film is based on the wildly popular video game franchise and will feature characters such as Bowser, Toad, Luigi and Princess Peach.
In addition to Pratt, the cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen and Kevin Michael Richardson. The movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who previously worked on Teen Titans Go!

The Queen’s Gambit actress is set to voice Princess Peach Toadstool in a new animated movie based on Nintendo’s iconic video game franchise, Super Mario Bros. She’ll be starring alongside Chris Pratt as the titular plumber, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong among others.
The movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who are known for their work on the Teen Titans Go! to the Movies films.
Charlie Day

Pratt will play Mario, with Day as his twin Luigi and The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy playing Princess Peach. The film is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go! To the Movies), and it’s written by The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part alum Matthew Fogel.
Keegan-Michael Key
Keegan-Michael Key has a fun role in the new super mario brothers movie as Toad, Mario’s mushroom-headed sidekick. He recently appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show to chat a little about his part.
The upcoming film, directed by Michael Horvath and Michael Jelenic, brings the iconic video game series’ biggest characters to life. It features an ensemble voice cast led by Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day and Jack Black.
Seth Rogen
The cast of Nintendo’s Super Mario Brothers movie is rounded out by comedian Seth Rogen, who voices Donkey Kong. The gorilla has alternated between a foe for Mario and the star of his own spin-off series for years, but Rogen brings a fresh take to DK’s voice.
The actor is known for roles in the Judd Apatow series Freaks and Geeks and comedy shows like Knocked Up and Bad Neighbors. He also lent his voice to video game characters in Kung Fu Panda and the Sausage Party films.
Fred Armisen
Fred Armisen is one of the co-creators of Portlandia, and he has a long list of comedy credits that include F is for Family, The Cleveland Show, and Lilo & Stitch. He’s also a stand-up comedian who has done work on The Irishman, among other things.
He’ll be lending his voice to Cranky Kong, the grandfather of Donkey Kong. Seth Rogen is Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key plays Toad, and Sebastian Maniscalco voices Foreman Spike.
Kevin Michael Richardson
Kevin Michael Richardson is a voice actor with a distinctively deep voice who has lent his vocal talents to several animated TV shows and movies. He’s most well-known for his role as Captain Gantu in the Lilo & Stitch franchise.
He’s also voicing Kamek, one of Bowser’s magic-using minions in the Super Mario Brothers movie. He’s a fan favorite and has a long list of live-action roles, including Deus Ex Machina in The Matrix Revolutions and Goro in Mortal Kombat.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Sebastian Maniscalco is a stand-up comedian, actor and best-selling author who hails from Chicago. He started out at open mics in bars and bowling alleys before making a name for himself.
During a podcast with Bert Kreischer, he accidentally let slip that he will be voice Foreman Spike in the upcoming Mario Bros movie. If that’s true, it could be an interesting addition to the film’s cast.
